Jiaogulan

  • Jiaogulan is the dried, loose leaf of Gynostemma pentaphyllum, a climbing vine in the gourd and cucumber family rather than the camellia bush. That botanical origin is why the leaf brews into a naturally caffeine-free infusion, making it an easy swap for green tea or coffee later in the day.
  • The flavor is mildly sweet and grassy with a light, cooling finish and a gentle bitter edge that many compare to stevia or licorice. It steeps into a pale green cup that stays smooth across several refills, so you get a soft herbal drink with no added sugar or flavoring.
  • To brew, use one heaped teaspoon of leaf per cup and pour water at about 90 to 95 C over it, then steep for one to two minutes. The whole leaves also hold up to the gongfu method, giving several short infusions from the same measure, with each pour a little longer than the last.
  • Native to the mountains of southern China and parts of Southeast Asia, jiaogulan has traditionally been enjoyed as a daily hot herbal drink and is sometimes called sweet tea vine. It carries no camellia leaf, so it fits caffeine-free, vegan, and simple single-ingredient routines.
  • Packed as pure loose leaf with nothing blended in, this gynostemma is ready for a teapot, infuser basket, or gaiwan. Store it sealed away from light and moisture to keep the aroma fresh, and adjust the leaf amount to brew the cup lighter or stronger to taste.
